Dr. C. Leslie Smith’s medical education began with a Master’s in Physiology and Biophysics, followed by her medical doctorate at the University of Illinois, Chicago. After training in general surgery at SIU, she became intrigued with Asian medicine and studied in Los Angeles at Yo San University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Emperor’s College of Oriental Medicine. She then returned to Chicago and completed her acupuncture certification (LAc) at Midwest College of Oriental Medicine, followed by her NCCAOM board certification. She concomitantly completed Harvard’s Structural Acupuncture Course for Physicians and is boarded by the American Board of Medical Acupuncture. Dr. Smith has been studying nutrition and culinary arts for 27 years and has over 20 years’ experience in adult education, including a Master’s in Medical Education and Leadership and a Fellowship in Surgical Education. Her research interests include hospital-based integrative medicine, utility of acupuncture and Asian medical techniques in a biomedical paradigm, and medical education around failure and success. She is currently the Director of Integrative Medicine, the Director of Culinary Medicine, and an Assistant Professor at SIU School of Medicine. Dr. Smith serves on multiple boards and advisory panels relevant to acupuncture and integrative medicine.
