NIH Director announces retirement of NCCIH Director Helene Langevin;

IHPC leaders offer thanks for her work and support

With great appreciation for her contributions to NIH, Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, NIH Director, announced that Helene M. Langevin, M.D., director of the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), is retiring from federal service on November 30, 2025. Since taking the role in 2018, Dr. Langevin has spearheaded the concept of whole person health at NCCIH, focusing on integration across physiological systems and positive health processes, such as resilience and health restoration.

As NCCIH director, Dr. Langevin has led several trans-NIH initiatives that placed whole person health at the forefront of NIH’s emerging unified strategy to address the burden of chronic disease in the U.S. This includes the recent funding of the Whole Person Reference Physiome and Coordination Center, led by NCCIH and co-funded by 20 NIH Institutes, Centers and Offices to create a cross-system network map of healthy physiological function. In collaboration with the CDC National Center for Health Statistics, she steered the development of the Whole Person Health Index which is currently being deployed in the National Health Interview Survey and the All of Us longitudinal cohort.

In addition to her work with NCCIH, Dr. Langevin has also been a great friend and supporter to IHPC. Len Wisneski, M.D., IHPC Chair Emeritas said that Dr. Langevin developed and implemented the concept of “whole person heath” within NCCIH, which she then promoted with acceptance by the other NIH Institutes. “Her respect for integrative disciplines is evident through the creation of the ‘Coalition for Whole Person Health Research.’ I am extremely grateful for her leadership and wish her well in her future endeavors.

Beth Clay, M.Div. , CNE, FICA (hon) Executive Director, International Chiropractors Association, noted that “Dr. Langevin raised up the NCCIH to a higher level of performance and direction. She is to be applauded for developing the Whole Person Health focus at the NIH and advancing the foundational elements of a good evidence-base for the entire field of alternative, complementary and integrative health during her tenure.

IHPC offers Dr. Langevin profound thanks for her work and support.

The ‘spirit molecule’ defends the brain against stroke in mice, breakthrough study shows

N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) is a potent psychoactive molecule present in the brain and much of the world’s plant life, but it also may be able to save humans from damage in the event of a stroke.

Scientists in Hungary used it to reduce the harmful effects of stroke in animal models and cell culture experiments.

Known to produce life-changing experiences reported to include the perception of dimensional travel, ego-death, encounters with intelligent beings, and the feeling of achieving a universal love with all living things, DMT can be found everywhere in nature, and is in fact produced endogenously in the human pineal gland.
